One guy’s theory. Don’t know where he pulled it out of. There are pictorial representations of people eating them (or at least that what they appear to be doing) a couple thousand years old. They would have been around before the pictorial representation. So, pick any random date greater than 2,000 years ago.
The taco truck in the Menards parking lot has excellent tamales. The Tamale Trolley as well. I wanted to get family together to make a bunch, my Mexican neighbor told me it’s not as much fun as I think.

Once your civilization figures out how to grind up corn, you almost immediately invent tamales. :)
