The only way to lose the nickname is to outlive the Elders and move away. Speaking from experience here.

What a hoot! When I went from my nickname to my full first name, my friends (and people who simply didn’t know about the nickname, like teachers) were fine with it. My family—not so much! When my father tried to introduce me by my full name, I said, no, just call me by my nickname! But then, it wasn’t offensive…

When my (now adult) son was a baby, the wait staff at our local Mexican restaurant used to call him “Gordito” before picking him up and carrying him back to the kitchen, where I’m pretty sure he had all of the cheese and tortillas he could eat… :)

Negr* is also a common affectionate nickname in Argentina (in spite of whatever the comment system might suspect… i doesn’t allow me to spelll it fully)
