I think the rabbits know you’re there even without Jock’s yapping. I know you love chasing them. It’s a basset must do, but do you really want to catch one? Really? What would you do with it? Think about it.
Having done some rabbit hunting with a basset hound, I have to tell you that no yapping dog will make half as much noise. The movies perfectly nail the loud baying sound you hear from blood hounds and bassets when they are on a hot trail.
Ditto squirrels and Sheela. She’d run out the door yapping like mad. and the squirrels would head for the trees. Rats, on the other hand, rarely made it to their burrows. Honey and Harvey are stealth hunters.
Actually Fred …… Jock barks like that because it makes it look like he’s chasing rabbits ……… but actually he’s warning them …… he just likes the chase ….. ;)

I think my dog’s strategy is to chase the rabbits until they surrender.

My wife had a dog that would catch small animals, play with them, and then bring them to her father who had to put them out of their misery.
