Homeschooled kids span the gamut, both educationally and in life experiences. Some are hyper-engaged, some are very lax, some are vigorously engaged in the community, and others are practically hermits. My mom helped one family return from homeschooling to public school. Those kids were about three years behind on their education because their doting mother saw their progress but had no idea what normal progress looked like. I have also known home-school families whose kids were far more highly educated than the local schools because it was like having a private tutor specially design your learning. I know quite a few that home-school because the local schools have difficulty with their child’s disabilities. And then there are those that use homeschooling to hide their abuse and neglect. And of course, the ones of the engaged and driven variety are most likely to take part in studies about the effectiveness of homeschooling.

As a former zoo employee, I can say most definitely that homeschooled kids go on field trips!
