Never been to a Lutheran potluck. Are they anything like a Baptist one? Without wine?

There is a series of comedy plays about church basement ladies and potlucks and life. In 2023 they debuted the 9 th installment. Note, not to be confused with SNLā€™s church lady character.

Brought a dessert to a church potluck and it went almost immediately. So I took my baking dish and washed it in the kitchen and was looking for, and found a dish cloth to dry itā€¦whenā€¦.in comes a woman like she was going to run me over and swipped the dish towel from my hands and said you canā€™t use that, itā€™s MINE!

I, of course was shocked, someone would act like that at a church function, let alone any where. I wanted to ask her, "and you go to church, WHY? "

You just never know what people react toā€¦ā˜ŗļøā˜ŗļøā˜ŗļøā˜ŗļø

Lutheran church potlucks at my church anyhow are an international feast. We are from all continents except Antarctica and we all bring what we love best from our cultures. Iā€™m always asked to bring chocolate cupcakes. Easy to do. 1 chocolate cake mix, follow directions and add a goodly slosh of vanilla, 4 ounces melted unsweetened baking chocolate, and either a small slosh of almond extract or maraschino cherry juice. Bake as directed about 12 minutes. Frosting is 1 stick of butter or Land O Lakes margarine, 4 ounces melted baking chocolate, a goodly slosh of vanilla, either/and a slosh of almond extract or maraschino cherry juice, a dash of salt, a little hot water and enough confectioners sugar to make a spreadable mixture. Frost the cooled cupcakes and seal them in your cupcake carrier. Do this the evening before the event, or if youā€™re a morning person, that morning.

And remember the classic line from Raising Helen. ā€œHippo wants to be a Lutheran.ā€

I could tell you some funny things about the Danish Lutheran potlucks. Scandinavians like open faced sandwiches, non-Scandinavians, donā€™t know how to eat the open faced sandwiches. Meh, It was funnier in my head. My sisters could probably tell me some.

Garrison Keillor got a lot of mileage out of Lutheran pot luck gags. My wife was raised as a Lutheran and learned a few too.
