Beneath your feet the whole time
About half the height of the Easter Island statues are buried underground. Not sure if they have feet. I have seen photos of when the bottom part has been excavated.

actually, correct…they have recently discovered that the Easter Island heads do have buried bodies beneath them

They probably explored that tunnel very carefully… just a couple of feet at a time.
