We take our trapped possums and raccoons to a couple of places with lots of space and near water. (It is worth it.) We like them, but they sometimes are too fruitful. Possums under the house eat lots of bugs and are disease-resistant. They can’t help it that they look like possums.
Back in 1988 lived on a farm in Michigan. Old farmhouse. While we never could out how they got in we had a lot of chipmunks running around the house and getting into the 50 pound bag of dog food. So I borrowed a live trap from a cousin and baited it with a piece of kibble. And started catching them, one every evening that I would let out in the woods about 3 miles from our farm. I lived trapped 19 chipmunks[didn’t set out rat traps as all four of our kids [Boy 11, twin daughters 8 youngest daughter 4]were running around the house
When I was a kid, my mother and I trapped a live mouse in a shoebox after our cat dropped it in the house. After some consideration, we drove it to the mall and released it near the dumpsters.

That’s one POed-looking possum.

You gotta go a long, long way (and certainly not walking distance) if you don’t want whatever you have to not come back. Usually not worth the effort.

What if the trap was for a career politician, where could you release it where it wouldn’t crawl back to… (snarky answer here)

Why trap a possum? They’re good critters.

That’s a ’possom they have (or appear to have) there. While an ugly species, they have turned out to be very beneficial. Leave him alone.

Now, if you want interesting, trap and relocate skunks.
We did so routinely for a while because they were honing in on our chicken coops, and skunks will kill chickens if they get in.
