When the courts gave me fines I just said, ’Can I have 90 days to pay?" They always did then they had to find me to lock me up for 10 days to cover the fine. It usually went off the books in a year, so rarely paid.
Many years ago, we dealt with a “frequent flier.” He was famous for harassing his landlady, and just about anyone else he came across. Harassment is a violation in NY, not a crime, so it’s maximum penalty (at that time) was $250, or 15 days in jail. I was in the courtroom when this person was in front of the judge, and I heard the Judge saying “Mr. (X) (Probably no harm in using his real name, since he’s been dead for years, But…) You have been before me a lot lately. I’m fining you $180, plus the surcharge.” He said “I don’t think I want to pay that!” The Judge said “Fine! 15 days!” Banged his gavel and waved me over to take him away, as he howled in protest. I wish I could say that he learned a lesson…

Shabbat shalom, fellow Cappers. May God protect Eratz Israel from its enemies, especially on the upcoming Passover.

When he loaned you the £100, did you ask for another £50 to cover expenses?

Even judges who can’t be bought can frequently be rented. Nice to see one with integrity!
