This style of sitting on the floor was instituted by the Tokugawa shogunate. It was designed to cause your legs to fall asleep and make it almost impossible for you to rise up and use your swords to attempt an assassination. The Tokugawa shogunate lasted from about 1603 to 1865.
I sat like that when I was a kid. Now with two knee replacements, I no longer have 180 degrees of flexion. Maybe 120. Sitting cross-legged (aka Indian style) is the thing I miss most.
All that getting up and down is good exercise. That’s why I sleep on a pad on the floor. Japanese who sleep on the floor on traditional futons maintain their full mobility longer. However, it’s not good to be looking up at your TV.
