The flickers do that here. I don’t think they are confused…they know that those hollow metal stumps really get their territorial/mating call out to the world. It certainly resonates in my house…I wake up “early in the AM” saying “What the grawlix is that racket?!?”
I heard a buzzing and thought someone left their phone charging on the filing cabinet. The buzzing was coming out of the fireplace, I found a woodpecker drumming on my metal chimney cap. The male woodpecker was telling the world that my yard, bugs, woodpile and the female woodpecker was his and he’ld fight anyone that disagreed.
