Keep in mind that the 33 days until the end of school are not all school days. Weekends off as well as Memorial Day and any other holiday… (And, if you live in NYC there are a lot of holidays on the calendar.)
Back when 80-90% of the country was agrarian and everybody needed large families to work the farm because there was very little mechanization, it made sense to let kids out of school for the summer. Why are we still doing it?

Clock-watching is bad enough. Calendar-watching will drive you crazy but more slowly.

When I was in school the academic year ran from the day after Labor Day until the week of Memorial Day. When and why did the school year get longer?
