Everyone needs goals. You just don’t need to remember where you put them.

In many cases, it’s not that you forget your long division. It’s just out working at a summer job.

When my older brother was in high school (and I was in elementary), he showed me his slide rule, and said that soon I would be using one. By the time I reached that point, calculators had taken over and I never used a slide rule. And I haven’t done long division since school, many decades ago.

I just tried some long division – just to see if I could remember how it’s done.

This is why the first month if school is wasted on reteaching everything.

And that is why in the USA K – 12 education spends the first 6 – 8 weeks of every year reviewing what happened last year. The USA should lengthen the school year. 180 days is the shortest in the world and it shows. But then again, the kids in this strip are going to be like Nate and repeat every year.

About 40 years after my first calculator, I decided to try long division by hand just to see if I could still do it. It took me longer than I’d be willing to admit for it to come back to me, but it finally did.

How is anyone not using it on a regular basis?? If something costs $1000 and you want to pay monthly, 12 into 100 is 8, 4 leftover after you subtract the 96, bring down the zero, 12 into 40 is 3 with 4 leftover, etc, payment is $83.33. Not even paper & pen needed -for this example anyway.
