A cousin and his wife from Germany are living and working in the SF Bay Area for a business based in Germany and the German government. Their benefits are the same as they would be if still in Germany, coupled with USAian holidays. At least a week at Xmas, a week at Easter, 6 weeks during the year and every 6 years another 6 week sabbatical. Last year they came up to visit for one of those 6 week vacations and spent the other 6 week vacation hiking the John Muir Trail. They love their jobs. Oh, and free medical insurance as well.
I’ve done a countdown when I’m taking a very exciting trip. When I was going on my pilgrimage to Lourdes and Fatima, I did a 365-day countdown. Also, being that it was a pilgrimage, I also prayed a Hail Mary for each day I had left until the trip. So I started with praying 365, then 364, and so on. So when the day before my trip came, I had prayed a total of 66,795 Hail Marys. Ant things still went wrong with Lourdes. And I’m also one of those that will start getting things ready months in advance of a trip. I’ve packed a couple Christmas shirts because I’ll be away on July 25th (Christmas in July) and I always put a variety 6-pack together of 5-Hour Energy shots. So I’ve already been buying some of those. And building up my Netspend card.

I had a great boss in one of my jobs who said “I won’t look for you and I don’t expect to see you the afternoon before a vacation or holiday.”

I made an advent calendar to count down to retirement. I enjoyed it more than my coworkers.

in the military, nearing your discharge date is known as being short… as in " I can’t do that, I’m too short"
