I try not to go into another store wearing my work shirt. Even when it’s totally different from what other store uniforms look like, people think you work there. Also try to avoid going to my store in regular clothes on a day off – some customers recognize me and expect me to help them. (BTW, there are some customers I would not hesitate to help. It’s the obnoxious one that treat you like servants that I would avoid.)
Hint: if you’re going to the store during lunch hour, chances are you’re going at the same time as several other workers, teen, and regulars. And weirdly enough, you will all hit the checkout line at the same time. No, really! As a register jockey at a grocery story it blows my mind how frequent this really does happen!
