“Your engine’s missing.” “Look again, it was there when I drove in.”

When my daughters’ vehicles need basic maintenance, they do it. I taught them how, my Dad taught me. Sadly their husbands’ fathers didn’t teach them… Ditto indoor appliance fixes. I was a divorced mom with little money but I had the “Reader’s Digest Fix-It-Yourself Manual” book. Hardcover google as it were… still have it. The girls and I learned together.

Gone are the days when I could do many repairs/adjustments on my 1965 Volvo 122s. Still have my 31 year old last model year 240 Volvo SW. Thankful for the Volvo specialist here in Tucson who have kept it going!

Husband and I started dating while in college. We were out in my car one night and it died at a stop light. He panicked. I lifted the hood, took off the air filter and stuck a pencil into the carburetor, then put it all back together. The car started and we were on our way. He had no idea of what I had done and was highly impressed.

One night we were out with a couple we were friends in her car. Her car died. The two fellows got out of the car, lifted the hood, leaned in and looked and one said “Yep, that’s an engine.” She walked over and, like me, knew what peculiarity had happened to her car and fixed it – and we were on our way.

Husband was amazed that a woman would know how to pump gas, check/add oil to the car, check the tires and add air and other simple similar car related chores.

    He still is.
