Have some friends who live near the woods, they say they can’t walk in the woods for the discarded shells and the ‘singing’ of the cicadas here in Central Illinois ! ! !
Many believe the reason periodical cicadas emerge in broods at 13 or 17 year intervals (both prime numbers), it reduces the risk of predators or competitors syncing their life cycles
We haven’t had them either yet. I just pray they don’t come next month, I hate those things. They find there way in your hair, clothes and when you enter or exit your car. Ugh!!! Utter madness!
Never have had them in NE Ohio, had to go down state near the river to experience a invasion, mmm…."89 or ‘90, (it’s been a while.Much more rural area.
The big emergences were in Illinois, Missouri and Iowa. The media made it sound like a nationwide event but it never was. There were horking tons of them if you were in the right place.

I’m wondering, too. It’s been exactly seventeen years since our last big “invasion.” Hope it’s not yet another ominous global warming thing . . .

It’s the media sensationalizing the story. Just like how they whip up the weather report.

I still have my tinnitus for sound effects. Occasionally one ear will start to soar for a minute or two, then it’s back to the usual.
