I have always had an open interior door policy, except when introducing a new kitten. The new cat stays behind a door while making contact with the current cat only through the narrow gap at the bottom. It takes a couple of days for the senior cat to get used to the idea.
During “orientation”, I try to spend time with the new cat while the other cat is occupied elsewhere. Any hint of favoritism can result in a permanent grudge against both of you.

A dramatic reading by The Mittens (We used to have to do those in English classes and theater classes)

Mitty needs lessons from Monroe in how to open everything.
