Remember when cars had vent windows? My cat escaped her box and made it to the front of the car and half way out the vent. I caught her tail while my ten year old steered – in the fast lane on a freeway!
Some cats do like car rides. I had a tuxedo kitty (my first kitty actually) who loved to ride in the car on my lap (before I knew she should’ve been in a carrier) and purred the whole way.
Not a cat story, but I was once driving down a highway when a pickup passed me at high speed….in the back of the truck was an excited looking dog. I thought, “That dog’s gonna jump out”. Sure enough, when it got further down the highway I watched as the dog jumped. It hit the road and rolled and rolled and rolled, legs flailing. The car in front of me stopped to help the dog as I sped up to catch the idiot owner who didn’t realize what happened. I could only tell that the dog looked ok in my mirror. By the time I caught up to the truck, it was pulling over; I guess by then he knew his dog jumped. What an idiot. I wish I had a dash cam.
I had a cat, Murphy, and, every week, I’d need to drive from North SD County to LA. I had a cardboard carrier for her. She’d be a wild animal inside of it. By the time we got to LA, she’d chewed one of the ventilation holes open enough that she could really get some purchase on the edge, and had made it big enough to stick her nose out. One the trip back, she’d have her head out the hole. Well, this got expensive, so, I decided to try not confining her to the box which also meant vet visit. We didn’t even make it to the freeway… In a few minutes, she’d circled the interior of the car, several times, and SEEMD to settle in on the back seat… THAT"s when she threw up on a new record I was taking with me… Fortunately, I had elderly neighbors who loved her and she loved them – all people, really: a symptom of a beach raised cat I suppose – so she’d spend a few days with them.
When I was young and crazy, I had a cat that would ride beside me. She sat on top of the back of the bench seat with one paw on my shoulder. If she thought I was going too fast or making abrupt lateral changes, the claws would come out. It was not safe for her but it was better than a driving instructor for smoothing out my ride.
Now my cats are always transported in cages large enough for them to move around inside.
I saw a cat backpack recently, which had a clear plastic back, and a handful of airholes. I can’t fathom how any cat would allow itself to be stuffed into that contraption. Maybe once, but never again!
My boy Horatio (aka"Rat") loved my VW bus. He would curl up on the dash board and watch the traffic. When he got tired of that he found a void space where the passenger seat bolted down and squeezed the 12-pound cat into the 5-pound space, twisted back around and stuck his head out. I dubbed it “The Rat Hole”. He travelled over 10,000 miles in there.

My dog hated car rides, even when he could stick his nose out the window. No idea why.

Had this exactly happen…except that when she got on my head she peed down the back of my neck. Luckily we were close to home.

I have had cats. Sometimes they needed to be in the car. I had a “cat carrier” for that purpose.NOT rocket science.
