    It’s the way of things. Every person is born into a world already in progress. You have to work with what you got and — with any luck — maKe it just a little better. Of course, their timeline is a little more urgent today.

    Not everyone predicts the world would be worse. The Harris campaign is talking about a better future. But a future we make together. As our Founders gave us the charge in the very first sentence of our constitution.

    Then there was Lucy Van Pelt, of Peanuts fame. She once let Charlie Brown know she expected to live her adult life in a perfect world, so the grownups had until she turned 18 to fix everything. She was quite adamant about it, as I recall: “Tell ‘em not to bother wiring for an extension! The answer’ll be NO!”
