It happens a lot. I worked in a restaurant for 30 years, starting out as a dishwasher/cook. Within a few years, I was one of their best cooks, but did they promote from within when the need arrived? No, they hired from outside, had me train this person everything on grill. I got resentful, and then they blamed be for my bad attitude. 2 years later, an opportunity once again arose, and someone told them that if they didn’t give me a chance, they’d lose me (not my doing). So, they gave me a chance. That’s how I ended up working for them for a total of 30 years…they gave me that chance.
It is the nature of business, I’ve been passed up and I’ve been promoted over others. I remember two of the managers who went to bat for me on a couple of occasions, I will always be grateful.

That’s been happening for decades. Leroy—especially when the “trainers” were female and the “trainees” were male! See the movie 9 TO 5.

Leroy looks all tuckered out. It has been a long day, training the nephew of the boss. It’s time for a long ‘nap-otism’.

Do you have any kind of parachute with this job, Leroy? They just might be trying to tell you something.

I can’t help but feel a lot of sympathy for Leroy. Whether it is incompetence or age-related, the end result always sucks.
