I’m sure restaurant burgers are extremely extra unhealthy, which is why they taste so much better than what we make with our 93% lean meat at home. My guess is that some even follow Paula Dean/ MIL’s advice and put butter in them. There are probably traces of HFCS in there but I think the taste is due to the grease/fattier meat and all the junk they put on them.
My brothers and I always thought the same as Michael. My mom’s burgers were too fat to please us. We wanted the thinner burgers they served at Mickey D’s. Little did we know it was mostly the filler they put in them.
These prices show this strip is very old, in Canada now there is no way you’re going to get a triple giant burger for $1.45.
The real test of a restaurant burger is if it is edible plain. Most places use such poor quality meat you NEED all the other junk to cover the flavor of the meat. In-N-Out and Wendy’s are notable exceptions.
I’m so old I can remember McDonald’s first burgers at 15 cents. And oh hey, those nice big fat juicy burgers we now have along with the kitchen sink, only 2500 calories. isn’t that absolutely WONDERFUL!!!
One local resturant here in Wichita, KS. You can see how the cooks do the meat. Still have to fry it. And you can ask questions. There is a partian seperates the customer from the cooks. Too bad the prices don’t reflect today’s. Also from the local resturant there are other things to eat that are healthier. Buffet style.
Earl Wash–13 cent per regular , for 2 bits you got small drink & fries combo & change . Large bun thin pickle slice you could almost taste if you knew it was there . A sprinkle of reconstituted diced dried white onion . A squirt but not enough for me , ketchup on a small thin patty of what appeared to be meat .
Earl , buddy Disneyland was still a dream . The price & service was wonderful but the sandwich , good .
A few years went by, the McDs Marquee read 2 million served but not (100% meat) the FDA seen to that . As they did the (100% beef) ah year or 2 before .
McD’s failed to ratify the FDA’s “no downed”in the US produced meat supply. Electing to import all their meat product from costless unregulated producers .
I don’t fear “unhappy cow flue” but do think it un-American . Mom-Papa ranchers going teats skyward daily and all .
EarlWash– If my memory
serves , you described a “Deluxe McBurger”. Starting price 16 cents quickly to 18 & not long after that 2 bits . Sales tax had just upped to 3 cents , making the Burger a quarter . Earl this ISN’T a question your veracity , I enjoy your comments large . I do wonder how you seem to be first posting all my best comments though .
To all …My apology for the length of this apologue .
Considering my daily calorie requirement at 6’2” and biking 7 miles each way to work is about 2000, I feel sick just thinking about a 2500 calorie burger.
BTW, look at crowd scenes in 1960s and earlier news photos and film. Notice how the average joe/jane is so much slimmer than today?
I’m trying to figure out which restaurant you’re referring to, kab2rb. The one that comes to mine, I can’t think of the name, but it is by the (former) east Palace Theatre. Braums hamburger meat is usually pretty good, especially the 1/3 size patties. I loved the Bionic Burger’s fries, and the burgers weren’t bad, but my system can’t handle all that grease anymore.
At a Memphis, Tennessee, burger joint, they’ve kept the grease they use to DEEP-FRY their burger patties since NINETEEN-TWELVE (1912)! Saw that on the Travel Channel one time or two.
Poutine is Quebec, don’t find much of it in Southern Ontario
~~~
I’ve seen it here and I don’t want it. I guess there will be some Canadian stuff I won’t be sampling and poutine is one of them, along with the ketchup flavoured chips.
Ronshua, I stand corrected. You brought forth much history that had escaped me.
I must admit that I frequented Mc’s but a very few times in my life. I often stated that they never have served food there. Since being somewhat of a ‘health nut’ explains why. Recently adjusted my weight to my H.S. Grad # at 150. Bragging? U might say that! But, at 78, guess I can do that just once.
I do appreciat your comments enough to say, thanks. You’re a good one.
Last week, we were on vacation and stopped at a McDonalds for breakfast. The pancakes and OJ made me feel sick. This semester I saw just about the grossest, most eye-opening documentary ever. Its called Supersize-Me, perhaps youve seen it? A guy eats nothing but McDonalds for a month and makes himself extremely sick. Gross…
Hell, any place they serve a Banger Burger isn’t gonna worry about a little unhealthy grease.
Look at the prices! How far back was this? But I remember a burger,fries & a shake for about a buck at Mickey-D’s. Now a water cup costs you.
This looks like a repeat of another FBOW strip where the whole family went to the same place, and Michael said the same thing.
Kind of makes you wish you knew then what you know now. And then you probably would not have eaten that junk in the first place!
Eating the hamburger is such a sloppy. No wonder why it is called a sloppy joe.
Well, it’s been a year since Lynn Johnston decided to semi-retire. Does anyone still miss the storyline?
I wonder how many readers have stuck around for this long…
