Absolutely. While my dad was in seminary at Sewanee, Mum taught in the local schools. She had planned a field trip to some local something-or-other and was waiting for permission slips to come back. One little boy hadn’t turned his in and seemed nervous when she pressed him about it. Mum went to the boy’s home, and was greeted by the pater familius with a shotgun in his hands.
“You kin jus’ go back to yer school. My son was borned in these mountians, and he ain’t never gonna leave them, so no sense in puttin’ fancy idears in his head. Now, git.”
Some say travel is the best antidote to ignorance, bigotry and intolerance, but let’s be real – most people will never be able to travel extensively. That’s where books come in. If you’re willing to read, you can learn about anything. And even if you can’t afford to buy them, they’re as close as your local library.
