I’ve seen this in my family’s pets I choose to avoid touching them. I also remember one child who woke up in fear of me I left them alone until they came around.

We had a dog some years back whose paws would twitch as she slept. They’d twitch a little harder and then you’d hear a muffled Mff or two. Then she’d bark louder. And louder. And then she’d wake herself up — with her own barking — and look around for “the other dog” who’d been barking.

The one we have these days does bark in her sleep, but it’s very quiet. It sounds for all the world like a cartoon noise for a bubble popping. (And if you don’t know what that sound is, ask any 8-year-old boy. They’re masters!)

Dogs dream of sitting at a table in the poshest of restaurants and having a snooty waiter ask them “Would you care to see the squirrel, sir?”

Most of the time I think they dream that they’re running, whether towards or away from something I have no clue.
