I’m a boomer on the tail end and I remember my father would yell when he sent me to change the channel. I would turn the dial so fast, that he claimed that the inner teeth of the dial were going to break. My kids are millennials and wouldn’t believe the story because remote controls were standard by then.

Same here. I sat on the floor closest to the TV so I was the channel changer.
