CaptainColorado - Iāve always wondered why Bill Watterson picked āCalvinā and āHobbesā and thought there might be some deeper reason. WHAT! What did Motherās comment mean? She said, āYou sound awful. Youāve got a frog in your throat.ā I just pondered what that means. Sore throat? CROAK! I think that sounds terrible.

Iāve often mused on that myself. Maybe Hobbes was used for the tigerās name because he is more unusual, less likely to be known or mentioned in normal society?
Wildmustang1262 says:
WHAT! What did Motherās comment mean?
A frog in your throat is an idiom that means your voice is raspy from congestion.
Funny how these odd sayings show up, and I always wonder where they come from. My husbandās side of the family, when they have a little something stuck in the corner of their eye, say they have a kitty in their eye. As far as I know, only Wisconsinites use that expression.
I think āfrog in your throatā comes from the disgusting, slimy lump of muck that makes the congestion and raspiness. Itās similar to ācoughing up an oyster,ā which Iāve also heard.
Yuck! Letās find something nicer to talk about. How about Calvinās face in panel 3? Or the look of disbelief in panel 1?
Iāve always been confused. Hobbes (the Philosopher) described life as ānasty, brutish & shortā. In reading this strip Iāve always felt that described Calvin best (at least physically).
Conversely, Calvinism is best described as an ascetic recognition of predestination or the practice of strict self-denial as a measure of personal and spiritual discipline. Given that Hobbes (the Tiger) is usually austere and aloof when he discusses life matters, in manner and attitude, this seems one of the lovely philosophical contradictions of the strip.
primacyofreason: oh, i love weird phrases like that. earlyier i was wondering where āditchingā someone came from. could it be that once upon a time people fell in ditches and their buddies left them there?

Hi there! Thatās nice thoughtful of you asking about where have I been? I am doing fine as usual. This morning I had to check those comic strips and posted funny comments, drank my coffee twice and then went over my sisterās home to help her pulling the ugly weeds out of her yards. Now I am home and rest for this afternoon. Today and tomorrow are my days off. :-) I hope you have a grrrrrrreat day! :-)
