âGrunchâ isnât a word that comes up in conversation very often,. but it is pretty close to that horrible sound that metal and fibreglass make when being bashed out of place. Couldnât have picked a better word myself.
Hey yeah.. BATMAN ! Another favorite of mine when I was a kidâŠ.all those bad guys would come skulking in and Batman and Robin would mess them up. With all the appropriate sound effectsâŠ. like âbiffâ. and âpowâ , etc. . Yeah, GRUNCH would have been a good one there.
I would ask my room mate what it sounds like when a car rolls into a ditch, but he was inside his friends house when it happened, a couple of weeks ago.
And on top of that, it went over 100 yards up the highway. So it was out of earshot.
âHooray, weâre dead!â
Tonto: âWhat do you mean we, white man?â
(Itâs) better you than somebody else Calvin, since youâre the one whoâs responsible, being irresponsible!
âDing Dong! The witch is deadâ
ââŠtherefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.â - John Donne
âFor Whom the Bell Tollsâ - Ernest Hemingway
Dum da dum da da da da da da da da da da da da tum -
Batman!
Dum da dum da da da da da da da da da da da da tum -
Batman!
Dum da dum da da da da da da da da da da da da tum -
Batman!
Batman, Batman, Batman!
dkram,
In the song âThe Lone Rangerâ, lyrics by Oscar Brown, Jr. (1974), itâs white man half a dozen times, then paleface once in the chorus, but the original from the sixties (or earlier) probably is paleface. I wonât quibble, but is either one politically correct, anymore. âŠremember Jose Jimenez?
After careful research, I have determined that it was
Dum da da da da da da da
Dum da da da da da da da
Dum da da da da da da da
Dum da da da da da da da
Dum - Batman!
(Repeat 12 times)
Batman! Batman! Batman!
(Repeat the whole thing 17 times)
davidf42 and dkram,
I said, âIn a word, can anyone tell me the lyricsâŠ?â The one word âBatmanâ would have been sufficient, but I must commend both of you for your âcareful researchâ. Now go read âWar and Peaceâ (1136 pages) and give me a complete book report ASAP! Even better, read the entire Bible in one sitting!
Itâs actually Momâs fault for leaving the car in neutral. The only way it could roll that way is if itâs in neutral with the parking brake not set. No kid could ever push a car that was properly parked.
YESTERDAYâS SCRIPT WAS A RARE ONE. NOT OFTEN DO YOU SEE HOBBES AS HIMSELF AND NOT A STUFFED TOY WHEN SOMONE ELSE BESIDES CALVIN IS IN THE SAME PANEL. âŠâŠTHIRD PANEL WHILE MOM IS DRINKING COFFEE IN THE BACKGROUND CALVIN AND HOBBES ARE RUNNING AFTER THE GOT AWAY CARâŠ
@TN-REDD: Mom isnât seeing Calvin and Hobbes, thatâs why he is not stuffed! The very moment, Mom would turn around, Hobbes would change into a stuffed animal.
Better jump into the good old time machine and go back and stop himself from doing something stupid. But then Calvin will likely talk himself into working the brakes and then to his own horror realize that his future self is still too short to reach the pedals.
The drama button is cute, but the anticipation far exceeded the realization. It was like expecting a raging storm and getting a âtempest in a teapotâ. An appropriate excerpt from The 1812 Overture would have sufficed, or for Western (oaters) fans The William Tell Overture, even. :o) Hi-yo Silver, AwayâŠ
I canât say that this arc is my favorite because Watterson penned so many near-favorite arcs but among my near-favorite arcs this is one of my favorites.
I think âGruntchâ is a lot more likely to fall into the $5,000-plus range. Depending upon the age of the car, nowadays, a solid âGruntchâ can mean a totaled car.
If Calvin is a typical six-year old, and we assume, more or less that he is, he will lie like a rug to his mother and claim that someone was attempting to steal the car but was unsuccessful at driving it and therefore it went into the ditch. All Calvin needs to do is go over to the car and get the motor started to complete his scenarioâŠhave a great, and safe (non-Calvin) weekend folksâŠkhp
thebird55, no, Iâm certainly older than that, but all I saw was Calvin pushing the car. Pushing it doesnât put it in neutral, but having it in gear prevents it from rolling.

Sort of a hybrid of âGrindâ and âCrunchâ.
Yes, I believe that would be the sound of a car going into a ravine.
Watterson was a genius, and I bet he didnât have to pay for it either.

Love the expressions in each and every pane, especially Calvinâs look in the last pane.
Remember all this started with G.R.O.S.S. Hobbes was right that Calvin has been a remarkably poor judge of what his mother cares about.
