I know the feeling.

I try to think of things someone might need when I visit them. My brother has a couch with a pull out bed that he never pulls out that sags so low you end up sitting cross legged just inches above the floor (not to mention the difficulty of getting out of it) so this year I got him those padded wooden boards to prevent the cushions from sagging along with a sports team cover to hide the +20 year old atrocity.

Don’t ask people what they want – give them what they need instead.
