Raking leaves on the last day of November? Where do these guys live? We raked our leaves on the first week of November where I live and the leaves were all bagged and hauled away 2 weeks ago by the municipal collector. There aren’t any leaves left on the bare deciduous trees’ branches to fall off.
While those may argue that Brutus is copying his Boss (Low Hanging Fruit) l would posture that it is Wilburforce who is doing the exaggerating here. Brutus may not be among the wealthiest of men, but he is in the elite class of husbands, fathers and family men that would go without something himself first before depriving his family anything. Wilburforce goes without very little it would seem. And while there me the occasional week when family finances are low, requiring the tightening of belts, his son would never suffer and all necessary family expenditures would be met, ESPECIALLY allowances to both his son AND wife. Brutus is many things, but cheap he is not……
Room and Board. Born on a tobacco farm back in 1940’s. Worked like a slave and never got paid a dime. I don’t miss the hard work but I miss those times. People were decent. No locked doors. Kids could ride bikes 10 miles from home, fishing and playing ball and parents did not worry. Just be home by dark. Had no running water. Just a pump on porch and outhouse in back yard and no phones. I remember when we got electricity. Got rid of the wood stove and got an electric one. Heaven.
It’s not always wrong to pay a child for chores. It helps teach them the concept of money and they hopefully learn some responsibility. Seeing a child spend their own money for something is always special to see, and even more so when it’s a gift for someone else.

Just bag them with a mulching mower. Much easier and faster.
