When I was a kid in the 50s, almost every department store had a Santa, that you could tell what you wanted for Christmas. I haven’t seen a Santa in decades. Sad.

I am Jewish. As I have been told (too little then to remember). My parents brought me to see Santa when I was little (talking younger than 4 or 5 or I would remember this) the “real one” at that Macys flagship store in Manhattan.

I was seated on Santa’s lap. He ho hoed at me and asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I looked up at him said “I’m not a goy”. (Yiddish word for a non-Jew.) He, not understanding said to me – I did not call you a boy. As I understand parents grabbed me and ran. .

I do have vague memories of going to see Santa in later years.
