A deaf dog doesn’t respond to words. I will never again train a dog without also learning the standard hand signals and using them with the words. Luckily, my dog just does the right thing most of the time. She will respond to signals I have made up for most things she needs guidance on.

I had a schnauzer that knew several commands, but there was one that he never understood. That was “Stay”. He knew exactly what it meant, but could never conceive how it could possibly apply to him.
