The Julian calendar changed the start of the year from March to January.

Originally, I’m told, the year started with the winter solstice. That old “round off error" has killed one calendar after another.

Today, people like to label the seasons by how they feel.

I guess that years are defined by the sun; and months -sort of - by the moon. One sort of wonders why there aren’t ten months per year.

January first as new year’s predates the Gregorian, or even Julian calendars, going back at least as far back as 153 BCE.

Not true Frazz. There were gyms in the Greek culture four centuries before the Gregorian calendar.

If the Gregorian calendar predates even the YMCA, what did the Village People sing back then?

Thanks to the Gregorian Calendar, 01 January is stuck in winter north of the equator. With the Julian Calendar, 01 January would have kept slowly wandering through the seasons.
