I’ve never heard “working a puzzle”. I’ve heard “making”, “solving” or “building”. Must be a regional thing.
It’s more like getting out of puzzle.

I’ve never said “I worked a jigsaw puzzle” or “I’m working a jigsaw puzzle.” I’m firmly in the camp of those who say, “doing,” “did,” “worked on” or “work on” (as in, to my wife, “Do you want to work on a jigsaw puzzle?”).
