Years ago our affable Irish priest related how a group of school children in Kentucky parish re-enacted the Magi story. Things went according to Hoyle until the 3 wise men entered the performance — they were costumed as firemen, not eastern kings. Afterwards the priest asked the child/director why his kings were portrayed as firemen. The director produced the script and pointed to a stage direction: “See, Father,” he said, “hit sez rot cheer, ’three kings come from a fahr.’”

There were three gifts, but the Bible never says there were three Magi.
