If forget what allowance I was given, but I remember Dad, being a generous person and “a kid at heart”, would supplement that allowance by “salting” his easy chair with coins that “slipped” out of his trousers pocket on occasion … some nickels and, once in a while, a dime. It also depended on which of us kids got to Dad’s chair first … the daily scramble!
I never got an allowance, and never needed to. But I think most allowances should be around 2-15 dollars (that was around the allowance my relatives received back then), but what would I know?
I argued with my parents for a quarter a week, just like all my friends. They agreed, quite willingly. Up to then I got a nickle a day………………..
Google suggests that the median American allowance for kids up to age 19 in the USA today is about $20 – but I couldn’t find out how they got this information, nor could I see it divided into age categories. And, of course, I couldn’t see what children are expected to purchase out of their allowance – a child who can spend their money on whatever they like will most likely get less than one who is expected to buy breakfast and lunch and gas during the week out of their allowance, or donate a regular amount to charity, or buy their clothing from their allowance.

At least you get an allowance, Miles. When I was a kid, our parents would pay us in boulders. And we liked it.
