I remember Larry Niven talking about writing, and at one point he set himself a task to write a thousand words a day – any words, as long as there were at least a thousand of them. After three days of typing his name and shopping lists over and over he was so bored he wrote a story, which he said wasn’t his best but wasn’t his worst either.
actually… I bet that works. When I took Composition in High School, the teacher made us write the first 5 minutes of each class. Kids had trouble getting started and she yelled (well, not really, but it seemed like it) JUST WRITE ANYTHING and we did, in very short order we got used to writing at the drop of a hat and if nothing came, we’d just start writing and very quickly something would occur to us. Just staring at the page helps not at all. (usually)
