What does Frazz think about paper cup water stands at long-distance races? What does he think they should do instead? Have personal reusable cups provided before the race by each runner?
Here inside my paper cup,Everything is looking up.On one comes in, no one goes out,Nothin’ to get hung up about.I’m free and it’s so easy to get by,Cause I don’t try! —- The Fifth Dimension. “Paper Cup”
Paper can be recycled many times into different uses. Styrofoam can’t. Plastic can be but usually isn’t done to its full potential. Which is best for the environment?
Paper at least will degrade, eventually. I live next to our city’s largest park, which hosts a variety of events through the year. Some groups use plastic water bottles. MOST people will at least throw them in the trash (there are also recycling containers provided by the city), but there are always dozens just thrown in the prairie plantings where they are hard to see, even if the event organizers are diligent.
Paper cups can be recycled. Styrofoam, not so much. Then again, maybe the paper in coffee cups is treated with chemicals or waterproofing material, and can’t be recycled. Does anybody recycle them?
A nurse friend of mine from Kenya has told me stories about how creative nurses there have to be in creating medical supplies- like ostomy pouches- out of trash. It breaks my heart to throw out perfectly good unused medical supplies (as required by regulations) because they’re “expired”.
Unfortunately, EVERYTHING is eventual “trash”. But, a good comic.
Styrofoam is worse that other plastic. Plastic is worse that paper. White paper is worse than brown (unbleached) paper….. but d@mn near every cup is still lined with a bisphenol (plasticizer) to make it more durable. And, the heat of the coffee helps that bisphenol to dissolve into the coffee.
I do several trail races a year and none of them use disposable cups at any of the aid stations. The HydraPak SpeedCup is the most common substitute. Each runner carries their own cup.
You can see a photo of the cup at the HydraPak website at HydraPak dot com.

No big deal.
When this planet is used up, we’ll just buy another one.

What’s worse is that they’re served by corpses.

Beats plastic since it will decompose in less than fifty+ years.

Hmmm… I should remember that line. I really do not like coffee from paper cups.

And the really expensive coffee made from beans which have passed through monkeys.
papamac630 about 1 month ago
And then there’s the coffee that’s made from a bean that travels through the gut of the civet cat before it’s brewed…

Should be “I read that in some parts of the world…”. Didn’t do the reading in some parts of the world.

IMO Caulfield should’ve said styrofoam cups. Those are way more awful and still very common.

In some parts of the world … civets.

And why would any capable adult need to use a disposable plastic straw. Just drink out of the glass!

Coffee cup made of trash could be a recycled cup?
comicboyz about 1 month ago
The ?most expensive coffee is one that is made from coffee beans that have been excreted from a specific type of cat.

So they’re not recycling paper in his neck of the woods? Tsk. Yes, it’s not a perfect solution but it’s better than trashing it.

Styrofoam cups are even worse than paper ones. Little white beads, everywhere!

I knew someone who used discarded coffee cups and discarded grounds to make paper.
Laurie Stoker Premium Member about 1 month ago
But seriously, all those paper cups are recyclable and I diligently put them in my paper waste bin. Or the proper bin at Starbucks.
