Last Spring, here in northernmost Maine, we had an invasion of ‘’tent caterpillars’‘. They were nasty and seemed to be everywhere. I have two dozen apple trees that were completely wiped out … no leaves and no apples. I certainly hope they don’t return this year, but at least we don’t have Winter Moths.
Adult winter moths do NOT eat – they don’t even have mouth parts. The caterpillars, which hatch in very early spring, are the ones who strip the trees. The female doesn’t fly; she walks up the tree, sends out pheromones to attract a flying male, and lays her 100 or so eggs in the bark of the tree. So at least one moth in the strip, the flying one, is a boy — don’t know about the other!
