I hear that phrase “your call is important to us” and I groan. When they pick up I ask “If my call was so important, why did it take 10 minutes waiting on hold to reach someone?”
This even after I worked in a call center for a former major bank. We had a goal of answering every call within 60 seconds. If more calls came in than expected, even management got on the phones. We had monitors above with the familiar green to yellow to red, how many people were on the phones, the average handle times and the average time people were on hold. We would apologize for the wait on hold first thing.
I know a guy who lost his job. He took out a payday loan, thinking he would pay it off when he started his new job. But it took him longer to get a job than he thought, so he took out a second load to pay off the first and also give him money to live on. By the time he actually got a job, this same thing had happened several more times, and he could no longer borrow enough to pay off the previous loans and to live on until his first payday which has a month in the future. He ended up taking out bankruptcy.

it was before the “my name is Andy Capp” part. Flo’s smile tells volumes (she knew the outcome beforehand)

Andy’s name must be on a no-loan list for all lenders of any stripe in England.

Andy should open his own bank, then he can lend out money he doesn’t have, like they all do.
