Saw a news item. Guy spent years rebuilding a pickup truck and making it fancy. Then some drunk comes by and smashes it up where it was parked. He said he’s gonna start again. Only the right front needs work this time.
Spent years restoring an old sports car. Sold it and bought a newer sports car. A friend mocked me for having roll-up windows. I corrected him, “They are power windows!”
So his dad buys him a ‘62, but in his fantasy it’s a ‘64. Because that’s the MY he really wanted. Maybe lack of progress comes just a little bit from lack of motivation to spend time, money and effort on not quite the right car.
I spent an hour at a car show talking to a guy who built lowriders. Hopping is very hard on ball joints, someone manufactures extra strong ball joints to prevent them from pulling apart.
There are complex statistical relationships between adolescents owning their own (working) vehicle and other parts of their lives. For instance, boys who own and use their own cars for primary transportation are more likely to have part-time jobs, but also more likely to spend their income on those cars rather than saving it for trade or college education.

Since you dream of your car being an extension of who you are, take careful note of outcome. An empty wallet. An adventure non the less.
