Canada stopped minting pennies in 2012 and banks stopped distributing them in 2013. The penny is still legal tender in Canada and by law banks are still required to accept them.
Hey, Pete – it’s the US; we don’t have pennies, and never have. The penny is a UK coin. The current smallest denomination of US coin is the cent (used ot be half cents; stopped those in the 1850s).
That is its name, that has always been its name, no amount of misuse over any amount of time will make it a penny!

Stores don’t have to take pennies. They’re not “legal tender for all debts public and private”.
