I recall a story from a personal manage wherein after repeated misconduct, the supervisor was okayed to dismiss a technician. The next morning, he received a frantic call from the supervisor that the guy was back at his desk with a comment that he was sure it wasn really meant.
I fired only one person in my career and sure enough he wanted to take my action to the plant manager. That made the decision much easier. Told him that my decision was already cleared
