Not taking his buddy to the emergency room. Just laying him to rest, on his own bed.I know I should feel more sympathy for the rats, but it will take a long time before I can forgive them for some of their heartless treatment of some of the citizens of Endtown.
Interesting â The Endtown logo on the flag in Panel 3 is the one we know, the the diagonally quartered rectangle. But this time itâs got something extra, the majority of a circle extending from either side. What I had was the impression of a Reality Bubble, twisted and pinched off at the neck. I wonder if Iâm reading too much into it.
I donât think weâve ever seen the rats look this solemn before. Their cynicism has always been shown as their most defining characteristic, but at this moment all of them are uncharacteristically silent.
Why? It has already been strongly hinted, if not outright confirmed that they canât die, so given their penchant for cruel humor, it would be in line for them to make a few off-color jokes at the expense of their âclumsyâ colleague. Think of the way cops and soldiers rib on each other, but if Death was nothing more of a temporary inconvenience. Yet they are all silent.
This condition of Athanasia seems to weigh heavily on them, couple that with the fact that their assigned duties are to protect the survival of a species thatâs responsible not only for its own nigh-extinction, but that of the ENTIRE PLANET!
Eternal servitude for people, who are not only seemingly ungrateful for what they have, but lately seem to act in the same ways which brought upon the Apocalypse in the first place.
That would build resentment. That would make anyone cynical and cruel⊠and bring them to detest the object of their servitude.
Everyone calls them rats, but look at the guy in Panel 2. Those are carnivore teeth on the side. Maybe they are uplifted shrews? Or just something unique?
Such great storytelling via the almost stark nature of each panel, each face, and the enigmatic single bunk with a number on it right below the flag which seems just tacked in place

The look on his face says that his partner is not coming back; but then there is the backstory.

In this story the rats are being portrayed as people with feelings for each other, which perhaps complicates how readers should think about them.
