@Rmom, just catching up yestre’s posts and saw yours about the storm reminded me of Saturday evening, when there was a storm kind of following me as I drove South about 20 miles. Got there, and about an hour later it passed over, so I had a real good view of it. The east half had the rain, and a nice little rainbow: a sliver of a double, then a whole single rainbow, and later (once I got busier) a nice glimpse of a double rainbow again.

But the real interesting part was the west half of the cloud, which had some slight rotation, near as I could tell. Not enough to start descending or anything, but worth watching. Did get some impressive phone pics later of the clouds to the east of us lit by the setting sun. I do love watching dusk in the east, and sunrise in the west…

bmonk - We’ve been getting a fair amount of thunderstoms this year, which is pretty unusual, although it is nice to not have the high fire danger which comes with the brown crunchy vegetation we usually have in late summer. In fact, there are scattered thunderstorms rolling through right now, but nothing severe. My current avatar is a picture I took last week from our side yard. I thought the clouds looked like we’d have an extremely gorgous sunset, so I was outside watching the sun set. However, an unexpected t-storm showed up and blocked the sun. This t-storm really surprised people - baseball sized hail in several areas. I’ve noticed that the tornado watches have been more in your area of our country than mine lately.

@Rmom, yes, the tornado that hit S. Dickinson last weekend, the locals said that the sirens didn’t sound until after the tornado was on the ground. We’ve had rain almost every day the last week or so, but now it looks clear for a week. After this afternoon’s 20% chance. That’s what they’re claiming at the moment anyway.

Of course, with all the rain the last month, we should be seeing clouds of mosquitoes as soon as it quits raining and heats up a bit. And the grass is waist high in plenty of places, and still green at mid-July. But when it starts drying out, we’ll have to worry about fires…

Shika - I don’t know that “storm season” is ever really over in KS. It seems we just trade one type of storm for another. I much prefer the summer storms to the ones in the winter. Ice storms are no fun, especially because we have an all-electric house. We have a woodstove for emergencies, but it is a lot of work keeping the wood box full. Also, since we have well water, no water w/o electricity for the pumps. I don’t like going w/o electricity, but I can handle it in the summer better than I can in the winter. Plus, in the summer, the roads aren’t treacherous, so we can always drive to where there is electricity.

@Rmom, lots of kids learned to drive in the fields gathering bales. You only used one gear, never got over about 10 mph, and there was little you could hit to damage anything.

Edit: of course, with the big half-ton bales, you don’t just heave them into the truck anymore…

bmonk - I learned to drive on a stick shift - starting at age 7. I forget the mechanical term, but the gears were never in the exact same place, so I had to sort of feel my way with the shifter before I shifted into another gear. Came in handy when I bought my 1965 Mustang, as it had the same problem. The boy I bought it from was shocked that I could shift it w/o grinding the gears the first time I drove it. My brother called it a “theft-proof” car, because no thief would be able to make a quick getaway. It had a 351 Cleveland, so it was definitely a muscle car.

Thanks Digital. I knew he was in the hospital, but he was expected to live about 6 months. I was going to visit him next week. It’s hard for me to get out there.

Now I’ll be going to his funeral. His birthday was on Monday, same as Doc’s. I did send him a card.

@Rmom, back in about ‘78, I already knew a Philosophy prof who refused to debate on abortion because very few on either side were willing to debate rationally. As you said of SOTU, most had their minds thoroughly set, and no argument would change their minds. He was willing to talk on it, and brilliantly, but not debate.

I doubt that the past 30 years has changed his policy on debate any at all.

    HELLO TRIBE!!

    I’m back from work…. zzzZZZZZZZZZZZZ

drystyha I like to think I”m young at heart. And any story, be it youth fiction all the way to hard core adult, is good if the story is good. Harry Potter has one of the best story lines I’ve ever read….and the movie adaptations are wonderful, too, even if they leave out some favorite subplots and characters. This time, i/o reading all the books to refresh my memory, I watched the movies, to establish the MOVIE outline i/o the story outline.

Shikamoo sorry to hear about your friend’s father. Prostrate cancer is getting more and more treatable if you catch it soon enough…but most guys are in denial because they’re afraid. Or they hate to cough. Come on guys!!!! A finger and a cough is a heck of a lot better than the spreader us ladies endure once a year for Cervical Cancer. NOt to mention the annual Mash and Smash for breast cancer. I have been feeling better. Still have a little bit of a cough but creeping crud rot does linger for a few weeks just to annoy.

The bed is calling. I’m going to make my rounds and bug on off to dreamland.

johnny, can you build a fence or put up a long leash line out and tie him out when he needs to be out? That’s what we did with our Lab/Beagle mix. But I will tell you this, we got her as a pup, had a long leash line for her in the backyard, but unitl she was about 2, my sons and I made many dog hunting trips in our neighborhood. If someone opened the front or back door and wasn’t paying attention, she would bolt out the door! Our neighborhood street gets busier every year with traffic because of new homes having been built out the road. There were times when we literally stood in the middle of the road to stop traffic because there she was in the middle of the road!

Hi Johnny- sorry to miss you. You say that you may be the only one to see both sides. A wise person can see both sides and make up their own mind. I find it hard to debate sometimes because I see both sides. But I had an interesting course this year on post-modernity and some of the reflection papers we wrote helped me to argue my side more effectively and intelligently.

Which one rarely sees on SOTU.

Akenta- I sometimes play Mafia Wars for fun, but I wouldn’t even trust an armoured truck at SOTU! LOL A machine gun maybe!

Sorry to hear about Woodie and your dog johnnydoc. It’s natural to the dog, but hard to see.

The worst I saw, for some reason, was my friend’s dog catching a cat. We made him drop it, and thankfully it scampered away, but I was almost hysterical. It’s like cannibalism to me for some reason. He usually caught ground hogs, which I didn’t mind. Are groundhogs and wood chucks the same?

I copied this from an official Missouri site: “The woodchuck, or groundhog, is one of the best known wild mammals in Missouri, but few realize this rodent is a member of the Squirrel Family. Its common name, woodchuck, is an anglicized corruption of an Indian name for this species. The origin of its other name, groundhog, is obvious from the animal’s squat appearance, waddling gait and habit of living in the ground.”

I guess they aren’t just cousins - they’re the same animal. I rather thought so, but hated to state it as fact w/o checking first. I’ve been wrong before, and I’ll probably be wrong again, but no sense making a habit of it.

Cleo, Yes it was! I’ve seen it with my sons many times and by myself a few times too! LOVED IT!! I have the song on one of my cd mixes that I burned.

Goodnight to all who have gone off to dreamland.

Shika, I saw your post where you said that you stick your foot in your mouth regularly and I want to respond to that. We all occasionally “put a foot in our mouths.” We’re human and we are not perfect. It’s not nice when someone makes fun of someone else when they make a blunder. I know sometimes we playfully tease someone who errs, but we should never put others down in order to build ourselves up. That’s just mean. People who think they “know it all” are only fooling themselves.
