2) My favorite cartoon strip character is Tumbleweeds, only itās out-of-print and not on this site.
http://www.tumbleweeds.com/funnies.html
3) On this site? Iām Calvinās āgood sideā (as created by his transmogrifier).
4) And just for the record, Iāll be 50 in early July.
5) I certainly remember Pogo from my youth. Loved it.
6) Anybody remember Gordo? (Iād be the cat from that strip.) Loved that too.
7) Lesson from that Sunday strip when C&H ran off the cliff? Iād have to agree with ādyingā.
we named our son whilst in utero ācalvinā, even though we didnt know the sex of the baby till he was born.
luckily he was a boy! we kept the name calvin.
he is 2 & 1/2 years old now, and boy does the name suit!

āI donāt know how parents do itā¦ reallyā
Neither do I, and Iāve been down that trail more than once. Youād think by now the human race would have given up on having children. Theyāre such a nuisance, such an expense, and, according to the wisdom of the following generation, we always did everything wrong. Why do we keep trying?
lateformyfuneral, like each generation, we think the previous generation knows nothing and everything under the sun was discovered by and is unique to our generation. This appears to apply more to the western way of thinking and is not as prevelent to the near and far eastern way of thinking.
Having said this, I canāt amagine what a hell-raiser Calvin would be as a teenager. Luckly for his parents, he always remained six years old.
I tried the āget your revenge by spoiling the grandchildrenā line on a friend. āIt doesnāt work,ā she replied sadly, āwhen they live with you.ā
Hey grazer, yesterday did you mean ā65 Chevy Nova? That was also known as the Chevy II. Chevy did not have the Nova model in 1955. Let me know if iām wrong.
Well doctortoon, Calvinās mum is also well-practiced in that areaāas Calvin always has trouble waking up on any of the āfive mondaysā of the week.
Momās got nothing to worry about - Calvin AND the whole family had the plug pulled on them 14 years ago, so no Terrible Teens are lurking āround the bend.
Theyāre ALL stuck in Cartoon Suspended Animation 4-ever!
Bummerā¦ā¦ā¦..guess Iāll just hop on over to mycomics-dot-com & read a great Liāl Boy & DOG strip called Red and Rover - next best thing, I āspose.
anobium625 I also have a friend whoās grand kids live with her. they are her life but she is sad because she doesnt get to be Nana she is more of mom then Nana she cant ship them back home.
lateformyfuneral and musicnut1986 i am that āyounger generationā and i believe you, when you say parenting is hard. Iām 19 and i donāt have any kids, but Iāve helped raise several kids. it is hard work and the youth of today doesnāt release it.
Mom sue knows how to handle Calvin. up you go and into bed. lol ive done that with kids before. lol
Thank you Rakkav and comicgirl1000 for your comments. About living with grand parents, my dad had to live with his grandparents when he was a kid and he was raised in the tradition of the old ways and also in the Marine Corps style, so while he may be stubborn, proud, and sometime hard to get along with, with his discipline that he nows passes on down to me, we will always find a way to survive no matter how bad or hard it may get.
To doctortoon, I Donāt even know what sleeping in is. My dad always has me up by 5:30 or six oā clock every morning. At first I hated waking up so early, but now Iām so used to it, that sometimes Iāll wake up before him, make breakfast, with coffee, and then wake him up. Never waste the day doing nothing my dad would tell me. And to think with all the things that need to be done, alot of teenagers are still bored and wonāt do anything but waste their day complaining.
Grazer, ahhh a ā55 Nomad, Chevyās iconic 2-door station wagon. If yours was stock it had a 265 cubic inch small block with a 2-speed powerglide automatic or a 3-speed manual with a column shift.
If Calvin had of become a teenager, I could see him with a ā55 - ā57 Chevy but with a larger later model small block motor. Or a warmed-over late 80ās Mustang. Yeah, thatās the ticket.
What cars do some of you picture Calvin terriorizing his neighborhood in if he had of become a teenager with a drivers license?
scrummys said: āwe named our son whilst in utero ācalvināā¦he is 2 & 1/2 years old now, and boy does the name suit!ā
Same here. Our Calvin is seven now and is still the spitting image of his namesake in many ways, though much more sensitive. His unruliness peaked around age six. Heās becoming calmer and more disciplined as he gets older (thank goodness).
Mom has the right idea, taking Calvin upstairs without speaking. When you respond, it just opens up another opportunity for them to argue the point with you.
What a kid! If I had dared talked to my mother that way when I was his age, she would not have just put me to bed, she would have given me the spanking that I would have never forgot! Come to think if it, you never see brats like Calven or Dennis the Menace get spanked by their parents. Is the media anti-spanking? I would not be surprised! Most of the media is run by liberal dumb-heads!
lateformyfuneral, why do we keep trying?
because it is fun!!!!
the words would not have made it all the way out before i was backhanded,.. then i would have to deal with dad when he found out. ouch!!!
Dennis was spanked often in the early strips, Calvin has been spanked, Lio was spanked recently, the parents on Wee Pals use spanking, as do the parents on Tiger.
Comics reflect society. 50 years ago, spanking was the norm, and frequently appeared in comics. As it has become rarer in society, the like is true in the comics.
My parents were Depression era farm kids, and I grew up in a military household. They did NOT own a copy of Dr, Spockās Baby Book.
For Coffee-Turtle, who asked how parents do it: lots and lots of embarrassing pics when the kid is young to be used as potential blackmail for behaviour when the dateās coming over.
if my parents had owned a copy of Dr. Spockās book, it would probably have been used to spank me. Mom had arthritic hands, so the spankings really did hurt her as much as they hurt me.
Musicnut, I picture Calvin in something like an old Big Daddy Roth Rat type creation. Ya know. like a styled up T bucket with an engine/blower construct that is twice as large as the car and A Hurst shifter so large they bounce cell phone signals off it.
Guess I was ignorant for not Googling āTumbleweedsā before, but appreciate your providing the link to what I considered a tremendous comic strip in the Houston Chronicle before they stupidly canceled it quite a few years ago. Will spend a lot of time catching up.
Youāre welcome. Some strips are true classics, and in my book āTumbleweedsā is one. Iām always glad to tip people off about its location on the Internet.
