You can’t ask a girl to do something without a reason. She will never do it. Moreover she will be on guard.
Calvin should have given any silly but tempting reason. Like asking her to guess how big it really is OR if she thinks there is a hole in the center of the ‘X’. That would have worked.
I had a similar experience with a friend who wanted me to stand on one end while he jumped on the other thinking it would catapult me through the air like on the tv programs. It didn’t work the first time because the board broke. When we found another one he found he couldn’t jump on the other end hard enough and he hit the ground a few times in the attempt. He tried all kinds of combinations with our other smaller friends but he never did get it right. All was not lost because we took turns trying all sorts of things on the other end and sending them flying.
“When a young man complains that a young lady has no heart, it’s a pretty certain sign that she has his.” Cdward is wrong in predicting that in 20 years Calvin and Susie will be married. Calvin and Susie will always be six years old. [Luckily for us!]
J.R., You’re entitled to your own thoughts on the subject. I don’t see the “love”, ever, in any of the strips, except that he loves to get her goat, and he always does, and she hates his guts. I’m not arguing with you, I’m just saying, here’s some of my evidence, show me yours. I provide plenty of it, but I never see anyone show us proof of this so called infatuation that a few of you talk about. I know none of my nephews like anything to do with girls yet, and some of them are now older than Calvin. Not to say it never happens, because me and my “Calvin” got married under the clothesline when we were 4, and it was all his doing. So I look forward to your showing me which panels cause you to believe this about Calvin & Susie.
That’s how children that age tend to show affection. When confronted with a new and unfamiliar emotion, they react in a way they are comfortable and familiar with. Of course, they don’t know they’re in love, yet.
That’s opinion. Show me proof of this so called infatuation. There is none. Watterson didn’t put in this strip. It is never alluded to or implied. Just the opposite is. You can imagine it exists, but people also like to imagine what happens in the comic world after the comic is over. That doesn’t mean it’s part of the real story.
@mrslukeskywaker, there were a few of the St. Valentine’s Day cartoons that had them being happy that “He noticed!” or “She cares” or things like that. I’m with thebird55 on this one. Not that he showed it often, but it was there at times.

To much information. Calvin, I am ashamed at your lack of planning. Your whole approach was to obvious. This was one of your worst planned escapades.

In this case you don’t have a snowballs chance of getting her!
You should have lured her to the spot, not asked her.
Good Morning All!

even if she DID stand on the X, Calvin’s aim sucks. He’d probably get buried under his own snow balls.

In 20 years they’re either going to be married, or she’ll be a judge, and he’ll be standing before her as defendant. Could go either way.

He must have been watching too many Road Runner cartoons.
Getting the Road Runner to stand on the X never worked for Wile E Coyote either.

women dont like high-handed men anymore. calvin, you should be in a romance cartoon, try that on Yenny.

I would love to see Calvin and Susie at 18 or so. Susie runs rings around Calvin. I want to see how that looks 10 or 15 yrs down the road.
khpage C&H has always been dark. He’s no Dennis the Menace.
mrsluke: funny clip.
mrslukeskywalker over 14 years ago
Littledutchboy, it really would be funny to see. I bet she married Moe, if they would have gone past 6, that is. He’s more on her level.
khpage, Calvin always WAS dark. It’s hard not to see it after even a week of being a new reader.
Check this one out:
That’s hilarious, and it’s TOTALLY Calvin.

“Not now, not ever”? And all in caps, too? My, my, Mrs. Skywalker. Stranger things have happened, and often in just this ironic way.
There are enough hints dropped in the history of this strip to make the majority opinion more than defensible.
