I try to slow things down and give my granddaughter as many choices as I can during the days when sheās with us. Sheās only three but both her parents have worked since she was born and now they work on different schedules and work long hours. I realize they both have to work but she gets stuck in the middle and sheās expected to be happy about it. Theyāre always in a rush picking her up or dropping her off because work is waiting or they have errands to run. Sheās rushed for waking, eating, bathing, dressing, and sleeping. Iām worried when sheāll get down time now because if things work out, theyāre sending her full-time to pre-school in a couple months.
Such small and trivial things it would seem but to a young person they are very big. It continues to amaze me the way that Waterson is able to bring such things to life and how all of us can remember these things happening. And I sighed at the end too!
Happy mothers day to everyone mother out there! You are Godās true saints!
Like Calvin I could never remember the good things that happen in a day, only the bad. As Human, said, things donāt really change when you grow up either.
Happy Motherās Day! I tend to lurk and have totally enjoyed reading all your postsā¦what time to you guys post these things? Itās midnight my time, and I fall asleep WAY before then! I, too, have a Loki, who is the absolute sweetest dog, so proving all my friends wrongā¦.I teach as well, but high school, so I see a lot of larger sized Calvins (and Moes)..
But you know it really isnāt because we learn to make the best of what we have - as even Calvin does when heās out with his wagon or his sled. What he/we need to learn is that the pleasure is there if you look for it.
By the way, to āblow upā the strip, many browsers will let you enlarge a page by holding down the CTRL key and pressing the + key. Ctrl and - will shrink it again. I donāt know if this works in the Mac world.
All I have to do is click anywhere in the strip and it expands about 2x or so; another click on the blow-up, and it shrinks. Javascripted, IIRC. At least when I disabled Java, it quit workingā¦
I had days like this as a kid, too, and couldnāt wait to grow up. And now that I AM grown up ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ I wouldnāt go back to those days for anything in the world! Some days may still feel like this but at least as an adult, Iāve got more control over my life now than I did when I was a child.
I hope all the momās and momās to be had a great Motherās Day today, I certainly did.
Dino what type of jobs does your daughter and son-in-law have? Also I know you enjoy your granddaughter soon she will be older and not needing grandma so much but you will see her in school plays. I would imagine they have higher education to.
Me my daughter is 24 and with her finance not married canāt afford to but smart enough to hold off on children. Their golden female retriever is their dog. My daughter wants to go back to school but money is a problem she wants to be a fitness instructor and watches nutrition. Our son 27 needs to go to school but will not apply for help, high school didnāt help saying he was more for work the schooling. And where we live the jobs are not great.
Calvin - this is why when adults have days like you just did they take sleeping pills to try to go to sleep and get some restā¦Sic transit gloria mundi. Iām a nightowl myself. Mornings, whatever. Civilization begins at noonā¦

For me by far the worst event of the day would be Moe. All the rest would be mere mild annoyance by comparison.

Ah, welcome to the real world, Calvin. The charm of this strip was his continual fight to stay immature in the face of days like this one.

I still wouldnāt ever change anything about this strip though. It will always be my #1. Perfect just the way it was.
