Calvin, it’s a trick question those two little lines are really one’s lying down, you just add them all together, so the answer is 11+3+1+1=18

Or using Tiger Calculus® 11 multiplied by the square of the imaginary 3, divided by the natural logarithm, plus the two lazy one’s and of course dividing the whole by 0 gives us the answer of… 2

The fact that the answers given by these two methods are different does not matter you will still get a B+

All he did was move numbers around in a way that is pointless and wasteful. Calvin should work for the I.R.S.

Though victorious once again, Spaceman Spiff knows that somewhere in the uncharted depths of space, the evil Wormwood waits for their next encounter.

The bug collection story will be back tomorrow. For production reasons, Sunday strips don’t usually follow the continuity of the daily strips (assuming this site is running all strips in their original order).

Once again I am impressed with Calvin’s vocabulary and imagination. Do kids still read science fiction or is it all TV movies and electronic games? Vampires are big around here … guess vampires never die :)

Good morningto all! Not only is Spaceman Spiff an intrepid pilot and warrior but he’s gotta be the universe’s absolutely best spaceship mechanic ‘cause he always manages to get his damaged ship back in working order and to get off of whatever hostile, deserted planet he’s crash-landed on! That or he’s got AAA or ISA (Interplanetary Spaceship Association). Have a truly GREAT week everybody!

I wonder how come Calvin can be so super intelligent (really smart) outside (when he’s with hobbes) but when it comes to simple sums at school he is even less than an idiot! Stange little fellow he is!

Intelligence is not merely a measure of one ability. Calvin uses his genius to practice controlled avoidance of boringly logical subjects.

I gotta get me one of those Zok Death Sloops. They look like they can do some serious warp speeds.

C’mon, Calvin, you’re brighter than that. How hard can eleven minus three BE? (Yeah, I know someone said that already.)

Ah, but wait…that part of his ENFP psyche that deals with mathematics is also the part of his psyche that deals with mischief such as stalling tactics. What we have here is an ethical problem, not an intelligence problem on a boringly logical subject: he simply won’t apply his logical faculty in a useful direction.

I was as much a screwball as Calvin (though more moral, usually), and I LOVED math and was GOOD at it. And, I found lots of time for daydreaming along the way too, even in class.

God’s timing in Calvin’s life saving the day for both him and Spiff….remember, in The Book, there are no coincidences, no accidents, and no luck. Just the interplay of three wills: yours, God, and the Evil One.

“Saved by the Bell!” One of my son’s favorite show’s growing up!

I remember it happening once in high school for me when I was called to the board to work out a problem for either Geometry or Algebra class. It’s probably the same in all high schools now but they mix Calculus, Triganometry, Geometry, and Algebra together and just catagorize it as Math 9-12. They also mix Physics, Chemistry, and Biology together and call it Science 9-12. I found it awfully confusing mixing it all together and trying to set it straight in my mind when my son was in school. I had to learn it to help him with his homework at night. I was glad when they had classes available to parents at night and on the weekends to help us keep up with our teenagers!

Lesee: 11-3. But the three is bigger than either one, which means the answer is an imaginary number. Either that, or complex, because the problem is more complex than my brain can calculate.

The common denominator in the problem is that all the numbers given (1, 1, and 3) are odd, and so the missing number is the numerator–and as Hobbes once explained, the numerator is the number 8er.

So the answer must be 8.

    Voila!
