ouch, oh, oh owee, ouch, ouch … just practicing for when Mom gets in the house. And when she is through with Calvin, it is Hobbes turn …. owee, ouch .. Quick, hide in the bathtub. They will never think of looking there.
Calvin is only 6 yrs old & no-one is home when he gets back from school? Perhaps his mother was caught in traffic on the way back from the grocery store……
So the six year old got home and into the house, while nobody was home to greet him and keep him out of trouble? It’s her who needs to do some explaining, not him.
I still find my granddaughter’s dollie in different corners of the house having a time-out! Last time she was in the corner because she wouldn’t lay down and be quiet at naptime and for keeping Nannie awake while she was taking a nap. It’s one of those talking dolls with three different modes(games, english to spanish, and body parts). She plays the doll during nap time when she can’t sleep when she’s been told to turn it off and rest!
The situation is funny.
The situation is unlikely. (Calvin didn’t need a key. A stay-at-home mother of a 6yo would not be shopping when his school bus arrives. The mother with the car keys would also have a house key. Etc, etc.)
Read it and laugh.
Analyze it and the humor evaporates.
Blondie214: It’s one of the great mysteries of the universe (or universes if you are into parallels) but there it is. I think Marge must be like the Oracle of the computer and she is actually responsible for putting the new strip on the site each day. But anyway, I will say goodnight to all and an early Good morning to Marge!
Does anyone, besides me, notice that the DOOR does not match? It is the front door that Calvin tricks Hobbes into ‘leaving’ (notice the windowless nature of it and the side of the door handle, and the back door (with window) that it seems that Mom is trying to enter. Plus, why would she not have a key to it?
Actually there are three doors, the first one he goes to is a right-hand, exterior, with no window, the second is a left-hand, again with no window, and the third, where “Mom” is standing, is a left-hand, one window. So how did Hobbs move from one to the next?
All three doors are the same door.
And Jamejo is right that the cartoon makes an error by placing the doorknob in the wrong place in Frame 2. I hadn’t noticed that error! But the window is not an issue - in Frame 2 it’s just too high up to be in view. I think it’s valid to omit the window from all the later frames just because it can’t be drawn in where other stuff (such as Hobbes’s body and speech bubbles) is happening. Perhaps that’s even the artist’s (weaker) excuse to make the Frame 2 doorknob wrong also.
What I had to look twice to understand is that in all the middle frames Calvin is inside the house, luring Hobbes to rush out and tackle whoever is coming home.
Now I wonder whether Hobbes collided with Calvin’s mom before he locked her out and told her off! I can imagine she’s even madder about it if Calvin hit her with a flying stuffed tiger before the lockout & telloff …
