Sometime someone broke in my cellar. I had the idea to call the police too late, so they couldn’t help so much and said, next time I should call earlier.
It is good that we are all ‘someone else’ only to ‘someone else’. If we are ‘someone else’ to ourseleves what will we we call some other ‘someone else’ other than ourselves ? ‘someone else’ to ‘someone else’ ?
Reminds me of an old saying: “All people are foreigners. Practically everywhere.” (All Menschen sind Ausländer. Fast überall)
alaskakid, we were victims of a break-in this winter. Fortunately, they were able to apprehend the guy through a fluke, AND we were able to get the guy the help he needed, for he had some issues to deal with that led to his thieving.
We’re lucky where we live in a small town there is very little crime, alot of people leave thier cars and houses unlocked. Mostly we have people drinking two much and fighting or young kids with new licenses speeding about. I grew up in a larger town/city and learned to lock my car and house up tight.
It’s a good thing Dad took his glasses off before he slapped his eye and forehead. I guess he didn’t want to make a ‘spectacle’ of himself.
Mom, are you expecting the burglar to ‘return to the scene of the crime’?
Probably not, Puddleglum2, but it seems to be a normal human reaction to being robbed or otherwise violated… which (I suspect) is played upon by those who really want to torment people.
We were once the “someone elses” too. It makes you feel sooooo frustrated. How sad that there are people in the world with so little consideration for others.
I remember another strip too artybee that didn’t feature Calvin or Hobbes. When Mom and Dad were walking down the street looking at the neighbor kids’ snowmen and they came to there house and said “you always know when we are at our house” or something similar ‘cause the snowman in front was another Calvin “work of art”.
been the “someone else” twice (different places) makes you feel so violated! I am glad Mom & Dad are not upset that all Calvin is thinking about is Hobbes; some parents would!
maybe its just me but as a dad i would have had my family wait back at the car while i checked that the person who did this(or that big mean dog coming back for hobbes) wasnt still there, before my kids ran on thru the house
I usually left home around 11:00 so I could have coffee before beginning work on the midnight shift, but one night I left late. A young man decided to break into my place that night. When he got into the kitchen, the three of us were waiting, Me, and Smith and Wesson. He left more quickly than he entered, that is for sure.
We had a break-in not long after we had our alarm system installed. They came in through a bathroom window and set off the motion detector when they tried to go out into the hallway to the rest of the house. Fortunately, the only thing they had time to take was two lap-top computers.
“Mom” is correct to feel a bit scared. The police were quite upset with me because I was in the house when they arrived, even though the “perps” were long gone. That very afternoon, I installed 1” dowels in all windows, and we had a security screen on the front door within a week.
Lived thru a break-in too. We called the police when we
got home only to find out later that two of them were in on
it. That makes you feel real good. Yeah !!!! And pro-
tected too ……… Thank God the robbers didn’t hurt
my two cats.
All that broken glass on the floor Oh that is broken glass I hope.
Hobbes is the only one that can tell us what happened I hope he was not stuck under the bed or somethig
I remember reading that Bill Watterson wrote this storyline after their own place was burglarized. Don’t recall the details but the strip captured some of his real feelings and reactions.
Such a vulnerable, human moment so beautifully captured by Bill Watterson! I am touched that Mom’s first concern was Calvin’s panic around losing Hobbes.
I remember this thread now, but this site has no real provision for spoilers, so you’ll just have to wait for Calvin and Hobbs to show up again - and also find out what item(s) were stolen.
Dino there have been small towns to farms where it’s sparse not as easy to get Sheriff’s to investigate. One Sheriff out here went to one called in for a burglary he’d been on the force for 2 years and it was a set up was shot though he called for help but died. Had a major man hunt sheriff’s local police went all out found the guy who did it and he was killed since he was armed and concerned dangerous. Happened way south east of us.
Johanan Rakkav,
Speaking of wanting to torment people, I have seen an ad picture video a number of times recently in the Boston Herald where a young boy with a leering smile is jabbing with his finger at various parts of his older sister’s (?) body, obviously exasperating her to no end.
Calvin’s mom, very sadly, has it right on the money. When the Lord returns this kind of evil will be brought to a screeching halt. No one will be able to get away with anything when confronted with the power of the One who is both omniscient and omnipotent. In lieu of that, I suggest that Calvin’s family get a Rottweiler….
I was that “someone else” once too (as I mentioned the other day when this arc first began).
It really sucks when someone with no conscience violates your private sanctuary that way. Your home is supposed to be the absolute one place in the world where you should be and feel safe. :o(
had someone take the hinges off the front door while i was working in the basement
on the other side of said door, my very angry chow dog
door was dropped quickly
Sometime someone broke in my cellar. I had the idea to call the police too late, so they couldn’t help so much and said, next time I should call earlier.

Yeah, around here they prefer you contact them before the burglar shows up!
Our police show up very quickly for alarm systems. I’m lucky that I found that out only because my front door blew open when I only had the security screen door locked- gusts here are unpredictable - got a warning for the 1st (and only) false alarm ;-) Monitor service is not cheap - but worth it ;-)
Truer words never said… And it’s why we’re responsible for caring for “other people”, even if we don’t know them… we’re all in this together
That’s why Jesus says “Whatsoever you do unto this the least of my brothers and sisters, that you do unto me.”
