Think of it as a performance bonus – just like corporations give to their big guys. Of course, if it were truly life-like, kids would be giant bonuses for failing miserably.
I was a middle child. I got nothing for A’s. It was expected of me. It continued on when I was accepted at both MIT and Cal Tech and was unable to attend either because I couldn’t afford it. So I now have a degree courtesy of Louisiana State University and the University of New Orleans. Much easier schools and a lot less stress working full-time and going to school full-time at those schools than either MIT or Cal Tech.
Actually it was the late 60’s and I hightailed it to K-Mart and had a blast. Sometimes I could buy all of my Christmas gifts for that much money when I was a kid.
As for Mom’s hair at some point she changes the style and I like it a lot better than this.

$10 for an A? When I was a kid we got 25 cents per A! Once I got all A’s and that gave me a whopping $2.50. Was I ever excited!

There were times when I was a kid that getting $10 for each A would have made me the biggest breadwinner in the family.

That was back in the seventies, Macushla, (see today’s post in Boomerangs). That’s probably the equivalent of ten bucks today.

I got $1 for every A on my report card, either silver or paper. I took paper (how did I get an A?). Did I date myself?

I would think an “F” is worth 1¢.
